Becoming a Coach

I believe in people.

This has been my motto for a long time now. It embodies the core of my philosophy in working with people for the last 19 years as a social worker, a campus mentor, a counselor, a life coach, and a meditation instructor. This near-20 years of experience has opened my eyes to the transformative power of intentional relationships, accountability, and a mindful lifestyle.
I’ve enjoyed my professional roles, and each one has been a stepping stone to the next. My time as a licensed social worker taught me that we are wasting our time trying to help people if their basic needs are not met first. It’s very difficult to focus on improving how we treat other people or trying to establish a healthy sleep schedule if we don’t have hot water or we are hungry.

I have a MA in Sociology, which taught me how to look at things systemically – we are all embedded in a social and cultural context that tells us what is “true” in life, while also expanding or limiting our opportunities depending on where we fit into this larger context. Ignoring these things is foolish and limits just how much we can help others.
My time as a campus mentor at a small private university gave me the tools I needed to help people break unskillful habits, establish new ones, and find the hidden sources of self-sabotage and poor decision making. This kind of concrete, applicable change is necessary, and really began to help me cement where I wanted to go with helping people.
I’ve taught mindfulness and meditation for 6 years now, and this has helped me see just how much our thoughts – the stories we tell ourselves about our experience – impact that experience.

My own personal mindfulness and meditation practice has shown me how we don’t have to run from the difficult experiences life brings us, but that we can sit with them, that we are stronger than we think we are, and this allows us to reconcile ourselves to so many of the things that used to bring us suffering. It’s not always fun, but it’s worth it.
Lastly, working as a Licensed Professional Counselor for the last 8 years, allowed me to see the deeper elements of our experience as humans that can cause people so much pain and suffering. This is where I really learned about people’s amazing capacity for resilience and change, and just how much we are capable of as a species. I learned to help people deconstruct the narratives they have about themselves and their lives to remove self-criticism and self-judgment so that they can tackle the problems in their lives more effectively.
Over the years, in thousands and thousands of sessions, I’ve sat with people as they talked about the most difficult parts of their lives – the loss of a friend or spouse, suicide, murder, sexual assault and abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, racism, affairs, and a host of other painful experiences – and I watched the transformative power of compassion, intention, and acceptance.

I feel honored and blessed to have spent this time with people, but I also realized that, while I was successful and very grateful for people bringing me these parts of their lives, it was not the best use of my natural predisposition and skill set.

Core Coaching Programs

Ongoing Life Coaching

This is the most flexible option, and can include anything you find on this page. Ongoing life coaching is a continuous, intentional relationship that centers around whatever goals you seeking to accomplish at the time. It can be weekly, every other week, monthly, or as needed, and can take place in-person, over the phone, or online.

Every single meeting will have the goal and purpose of sending you out with concrete, applicable, and actionable things you can do until the next time we meet. This isn’t limited to business or habit-related goals either – I work with many people on more abstract things like increasing mindfulness, living in gratitude, and simply being more intentional with their time. This is a flexible, personalized way to explore, establish, or extinguish habits, patterns, beliefs, perspectives, start projects, and anything else you want to add to or eliminate from your life.

Meeting are 50 minutes long, and cost $150 each, but I also offer them in packages to help make them more affordable, and to encourage long-term commitment to living the life you want to live.

Cornerstone Coaching Program

The cornerstone is the first stone set in construction, and everything else is determined in reference to it. Our habits are really the cornerstone of our external lives, and these are determined by our thoughts, and how we relate to our internal life.

The Cornerstone Coaching Program is an all-encompassing re-examination and re-building your life, in the way you want it, from the very first stone up.

This 10-meeting program starts by establishing your specific goals and obstacles, before moving on to a deep dive into your internal experience, first learning how to set effective goals, before moving on to creating the systems that will allow them to survive. How we experience the world is everything, so we will explore your thoughts and emotions, where they come from, and how to relate to them in a way that allows you as much freedom as possible.

The real world very much matters, so the next step is to explore actions and habits that you want to change in some way – whether adding something new, increasing or decreasing something, or stopping something that simply is not helping you be the person you want to be. We will also dig into time management, your relationships, and what you are able to control in life versus the things you must learn to accept and make the most of.

The last two meetings will focus on two foundational practices that may make the biggest difference in your life: meditation and mindfulness. Both are presented in a secular/non-religious context (though I am fully capable and happy to tailor them to your worldview in whatever way is best for you), and are designed to be something you can incorporate into your life seamlessly and realistically.

The cost for this entire program is $1250, and I am willing to insert additional meetings based around specific topics that you might want to take a deeper dive into at the same lower price ($125 per individual session).

Ongoing Couples Coaching

You’re in a good relationship, and things are cool. You communicate well, you enjoy each other’s company, your sex life is at or pretty close to where you’d like it to be, but you know that things can always be a little bit better. Ongoing couples coaching is meant to tweak the things that aren’t working as well as they could be or improve the places that could be just a little bit better.

It’s important to note that this is not meant to repair deeply fractured or broken relationships, recover from infidelity, or address abuse in a marriage – these things would be better served by a licensed counselor or marital therapist, and I will be more than happy to refer you to some wonderful people if that is where your relationship is at. We can always work together after things are on a more even keel!

Couples Crash Course to a Healthier Relationship

Want a better relationship but don’t want to make it an ongoing thing? This couples crash course will help you address multiple areas in your relationship in a cohesive, 10-session program designed to revamp things from the foundation up.

After an initial session to learn about you as a couple, we will focus on building a durable relationship, investing in your history as a couple, responding to the other person’s needs, sharing power, understanding and communicating well, and building a common meaning, among other things, all tailored specifically to you and your partner.

The cost for this entire program is $1500 and I am willing to insert additional meetings based around specific topics that you might want to take a deeper dive into at the same lower price ($150 per individual session).

Meditation Instruction

If you are reading this, there’s a good chance you are interested in improving your life in some way, and I cannot think of many things that can improve our lives as thoroughly as a simple meditation practice can – becoming a Certified Meditation and Mindfulness Instructor is among the most important things I have done in my life so far. Meditation is more than the stress relief tool we often see it promoted as in our modern world. It allows us to change our relationship to all the things that are beyond our control (which, if we are honest, is literally everything except our response to the things we cannot control), and this changes our life.

This program is meant to help acquaint you with the fundamentals of meditation so that you can establish your own practice by helping you understand what meditation is and what the different types of meditation are. We will address myths and misconceptions about meditation, as we will meditate every session in order to make the practice concrete and real. The program also includes a meditation journal to help you maintain an awareness of your practice and any questions you may have so you can bring them up in our sessions.

This program is meant to be a complete introduction so that further classes or training is not required unless you are seeking more depth to your practice.

Mindfulness Instruction

This is important: mindfulness and meditation are not synonymous. Mindfulness – the bare awareness of the present moment without judgment or criticism – is a type of meditation, and is difficult to truly practice or maintain without a formal meditation practice.

I can honestly say that nothing has changed my life the way mindfulness has, and I am grateful every time I am able to offer this practice to anyone.

This is an introductory program in mindfulness and mindful living, and covers all the basics such as what mindfulness is and is not, the difference between and how to perform formal and informal practices. Every session will involve a mindfulness practice.

Even one session can bring a life-changing practice into your world.

Why Coaching?

Like I said – I’ve enjoyed and feel blessed for my time as a counselor. I don’t know that I could exaggerate that statement. But, I’ve also noticed that there are certain things I am better at than others.

Let me back up a little bit. You’ll learn more about this in the about me section and in my blog posts, but the short version is this: I spent a lot of my life in darkness, and this gives me a personal understanding  of just how good it feels to change and do something different with your life. Because of this, my natural tendency is not to dig around in the past and figure out the “whys” of what is going on, but to try to help people figure out what they can do differently right here and now, and to help them sort out the “how.”

This is all well and good, but it’s not necessarily what people need sometimes. There is a deep and life-changing value in sorting through and reconciling the past, and the “whys” very much matter – I am just not the best person to help people with this

I am good at helping people find what isn’t working and coming up with a plan to get it working. I am good at distilling information and creating applicable ways of applying it.

I am less-good at digging into deep emotional issues and talking about the past. There’s always this little voice inside of me searching for ways to shift things so they can be applied in the present – right here and right now.

This is what coaching is all about: working in a cooperative, collegial relationship to clarify goals, identify limiting issues, create plans to deal with them, and maintain accountability to reach them. Life coaching is preventative and holistic, and harnesses the power of changing how we think and behave.

In short, it’s everything that I love doing with people, and is the culmination of the last 20 years of working with people in purposeful, intentional ways.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you think this might be useful for you and that we might be a good fit. You can learn more about who I am and what I do through the aforementioned about me and blog pages, and my podcast is a good resource for that as well. I also post on Instagram and Facebook, though I intentionally limit my time on social media.

I look forward to working together!

Investment

We all need to make money, I embrace this.

That being said, my real driving motivation in life is to help people find ways to live free – free from the struggles and worries and attachments that create so much suffering for us. Because of this, my pricing is structured in a way that encourages long-term relationships and intentional programs and courses of study through lower rates for commitment to certain goals. I’m willing to work with you in whatever way you prefer, but I will always encourage people toward long-term, lasting change that eventually makes me unnecessary in their lives.

All sessions are 50 minutes long unless other arrangements are made ahead of time, and cost $150 per session. Every session will leave you with something worthwhile and concretely useful to work on until we meet again. This is all – every single aspect of it – designed to help you do the things you want and were meant to do. So, even if you only commit to a single session, I believe you will be different at the end of it.

All that said, long-term commitment to change is optimal, so I offer discounts depending on the number of sessions purchased at once. I try to be upfront and acknowledge that this is how I make my living and that money certainly matters, but helping people find real change in their lives is equally important to me.

Lastly, I try very hard to work with people financially, so please do not let these numbers keep you from making the changes you want to make – reach out to me!

Now, all that said, I know that life coaching is an investment, and not everyone is ready to make that investment, or they may not be able to with their current financial situation. This doesn’t mean that you are stuck or cannot begin to make the changes yourself. Below is a list of books that, I believe, can allow you to change yourself, from the ground up, or at least begin the process. Most are available at local libraries, and none of them are overly expensive.
